Lateral Core Strength
At a Glance
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Length: Approximately 30–40 minutes
Equipment: Dumbbells, BOSU, weight bench, resistance cable
Focus: Lateral core strength, trunk and pelvic stability, posterior sling strength, rotational control, balance, and force transfer
Best For: Runners, athletes, active adults, and anyone looking to build a stronger, more stable core for sport, training, and to support everyday movement to prevent buckling and collapsing during walking, running, or standing upright
Why This Program Works
Your core has to do more than create forward and backward movement. It also has to control side-to-side motion, stabilize the trunk and pelvis, manage rotation, and transfer force across the body.
Lateral Core Strength trains those abilities through side planks, Copenhagen variations, unstable BOSU work, rotational movements, and cross-body strength exercises. Instead of isolating one abdominal muscle, these movements ask the shoulders, trunk, hips, and pelvis to work together to keep your body balanced and controlled.
The program also strengthens the posterior sling, which is the diagonal connection between the upper back and shoulder on one side of the body and the opposite hip and glute. This system plays an important role in transferring force across the torso and coordinating opposite-side arm and leg movement.
That matters tremendously for running and athletic movement, where every stride requires the trunk and pelvis to remain stable while the arms and legs move reciprocally. It also carries directly into everyday life when you walk, climb stairs, carry something on one side, reach across your body, lift while turning, or regain your balance when your weight shifts.
By training the core laterally, rotationally, and diagonally, you're building more than abdominal strength, you're building a trunk that can stabilize your body, connect your upper and lower halves, transfer force, and keep you balanced while you move.
What You’ll Achieve
With consistent practice, Lateral Core Strength will help you build:
Stronger lateral core muscles to better support and stabilize your trunk during movement.
Improved balance and single-leg stability as your core, hips, and pelvis learn to control shifts in body weight.
Greater trunk and pelvic control during running, lifting, rotating, reaching, and changing direction.
A stronger posterior sling to improve the diagonal connection between your upper and lower body.
Better rotational strength and control so you can produce and transfer force without losing stability through your spine or pelvis.
Improved cross-body coordination for more efficient running, athletic movement, and everyday tasks.
A stronger foundation for strength and power, giving your body the stability it needs before adding greater load, speed, or force.
The goal is strength you can actually use while your body is moving, giving you better balance, stability, control, and force transfer from one side of your body to the other.
