Threshold Test
Push Your Pace. Recover Under Fatigue.
The Threshold Test workout is designed to challenge your ability to sustain hard efforts while repeatedly transitioning between running and explosive bodyweight exercises.
Each run targets a different intensity, from sprinting to speed work to race pace, while the burpees, jump lunges, and squat jumps elevate your heart rate and force your muscles to keep producing power under fatigue.
This workout massively tests your cardiovascular fitness, but also your muscular endurance, coordination, and mental toughness.
This workout is a combination of training your body to recover quickly while also training your heart, lungs, muscles, and mind to keep pushing hard under fatigue. It’s a double edged sword.
Workout Goals
Move quickly between the run and floor exercises.
The transition is part of the workout. As soon as your run ends, begin the bodyweight exercise without standing around catching your breath.
Perform every repetition with speed while maintaining form.
Explosive movement is the goal, but quality always comes first. Maintain good alignment, land softly, and control each repetition even as fatigue sets in.
Limit your recovery before returning to the run.
Once you've completed the floor exercise, allow yourself no more than 1–2 minutes before starting the next running interval. The purpose is to challenge your ability to recover and perform again while your heart rate remains elevated.
Why This Workout Works
By alternating high-intensity running with explosive lower-body movements, you're training your body to recover while still working.
This improves:
Running economy under fatigue
Lactate threshold and work capacity
Muscular endurance
Explosive power
Mental resilience during sustained efforts
For runners and endurance athletes, this closely mimics the feeling of maintaining pace when your legs are heavy and your breathing is challenged. Learning to produce quality movement under fatigue is one of the best ways to build a stronger, more durable athlete.
Who It's For
This workout is ideal for runners, endurance athletes, and anyone looking to improve conditioning, power, and fatigue resistance.
